As a little boy, Reggie was always interested in music. Standing by
his grandfather, Web Duncan, in the choir and hearing his grandfather Will McCall sing
with a quartet every Sunday night were formative and much cherished times.
His mom, Vanetta Duncan, was the church pianist all of his life. Reggie accepted Christ
at the age of 6.
There was always a guitar around the house and his dad, J. L. Duncan, was a very good
player. He grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry on WSM, Clear Channel 650 AM on
Friday and Saturday night. In addition to the Grand Ole Opry, he took an
interest in the Gospel Singing Jubilee Television show, being enticed with the
live bands of the Goodmans, the Hinsons and the Inspirations.
By 1971, J. L. had purchased a brand-new Sho-Bud pedal steel guitar. He had
desired one for many years, having played a lap-steel during the 50s. Reggie
quickly developed a love for the instrument and his dad obliged by teaching him
to play “The Old-Rugged Cross”. This set Reggie on a course of developing a love
affair with music and the Pedal Steel Guitar that not even he could have imagined!
However, only one could play the steel guitar at a time! His father taught him
to play chords on a guitar as well as showing him how to play the bass notes on
the top 4 strings, kindling his interest in desiring a bass guitar. So, in 1974,
Reggie got his first guitar, a Carvin bass. By this time, Reggie’s brother, Clay
Duncan, had a drum set. So, the trio began to play music quite often, eventually
going out as a “team” to back various Christian artists in the area.
Reggie began playing with The Gloryland Quartet in 1976. It was obvious that he
would need his own steel guitar. The group bought him an Emmons. Reggie went on
to play with the Nations Family, Pathfinders, Bennon Case, Richard Carroll Smith,
Hub City Quartet, Sons of Faith, Redemption The Singspirations
Continentals his own family group The Duncans, and many others. Reggie had the
opportunity to record in Nashville and was the staff steel guitarist for the TV
show, Southland Gospel Music in 1977-78
The life long dream of playing music was realized in 1979, when Kenny Hinson
offered Reggie a full time job as the Hinsons steel guitar player. After much
prayer, Reggie felt the Lord leading in a different way. Reggie then went on
to play and back the Bales Brothers; the Dixie Echoes; and the New Hinsons on
various concerts over the next few years.
In 1983, Reggie married his lovely wife, Averine Duncan, and by the end of the
decade had two children, Lindsay and Jake.
The Lord opened up an eleven year association with the Christian supper club,
Country Village Restaurant in Tickfaw, Louisiana, in 1993. His quartet, The
Duncans, was booked by the restaurant to sing as a special guest. From that point
on, the Duncans were involved in that ministry. During his years there, Reggie
and Averine ran the food service, played steel guitar in the band, and booked
the talent for the Country Village. There, he developed close friendships with
many people in that area and across the country. “Playing ‘The Lighthouse’ with
Ronnie Hinson, would have to be one the greatest things that has ever happened to
me musically. I have seen that song move thousands of people closer to Christ
during the last 36 years,” Reggie said.
From the late 70s until 1998, Reggie played on many recordings as a session
musician. Reggie opened his recording studio, HighWay 44 Recording, in 1998.
Since then, he has produced over 250 recording projects and 6 charting Christian
Country songs. During his years of recording, Reggie has played on recordings
with The Freemans, Karen Peck and New River, Randy Miller, The Lumber River
Quartet and The Stanleys, to mention a few notable artists.
In March, 2006 Reggie stepped onto the Providentials tour bus running sound.
Since that time Reggie has become a vital part of the Providentials Ministry
helping the group in concert as well as creating tracks for their albums.
